No matter the size most recreational boats spend a lot of time sitting in a pen or on a trailer costing you money.
But you wouldn’t be without your pride and joy for all the tea in China because there’s nothing like being ‘out there somewhere’.
We’ve been reminded lately about small business taking advantage of tax breaks as part of the Rudd government’s stimulus package. Qualifying businesses can receive a 50 per cent tax deduction for all investment into new equipment purchased before the end of 2009.
A new boat ownership program designed to fit into the small business classification has been set up by Alpha Craft Australia and dealerships around the country are being established including Portside Marine at Yangebup.
Alpha Craft vessels are available ranging up to 30 metres in length and under the lease arrangement people have private ownership rather than a share option.
Other vessels available include the Queensland-built Black Watch range from the 26 foot Sports trailerable to the 50 foot Flybridge cruiser, the West Australian-built Black Fin aluminium fishing boats, plus a selection of imported runabouts and the Rapid rigid inflatable boats. The minimum purchase is $15,000.
“While there’s still a bit of uncertainty for business and investors alike, the program allows every buyer a 2 year lease covering all costs. We have a new structure to the market allowing owners to purchase the boat they were intending to buy anyway but they then lease it back to the retailing dealership through a commercial arrangement using the Alpha Craft Demonstrator Lease Program. The benefit is they can turn their personal boat purchased using after-tax dollars into a commercial opportunity and buy the boat from pre-tax dollars, saving them a huge amount of money,” said Rob Gibellini from Portside.
Alfa Craft Australia is a wholesaler to the marine industry, supplying dealers with new boats for retail sale. Generally, the dealerships use finance companies to fund the supply of these boats for stock awaiting selling on.
“There is a fully structured lease, all costs to own the boat are paid for by the dealership, the boat is fully maintained by a boatman so there is no cleaning and best of all, the owner has the use of the boat when it is not being used by the dealer. This has to be close to the perfect way to own a boat," said Gibellini.
“Most owners use their boat once a week at best, the rest of the time it sits in a pen or on a trailer doing nothing. Most boat retailers have vessels sitting in pens or on trailers in their yards doing nothing awaiting buyers. The basic premise is that most boats in the pleasure market sit doing nothing no matter who owns them. The Alpha Craft lease arrangement allows you to have the boat earning you an income when it is sitting there doing nothing, and therefore allows you to obtain all the benefits that a business can."
